DAVID J O'REGAN
MBA MD BM FRCSEd (C-Th) FFSTEd

SAFE

I have been a consultant in Leeds for sixteen years and have past the three thousand operation milestone.  I am pleased to inform you that my overall mortality is 2.6%.  This has been achieved with a stroke rate of less than 0.5%.

EFFECTIVE

We are entering an era where the patient is looking beyond mortality as a marker of good practice.  I am delighted to inform you that there have been only two wounds problems out of more than 1500 sternal wound closures since I introduced a wound care bundle in 2009 – I have presented these results at national and international conferences.  The nursing staff can identify my patients just by looking at the quality of the patient scar!

EXPERIENCE

I have been running a ‘fit to admit’ clinic since 2003 and I have realised significant clinical and operational benefits that have been published in peer review journals.  Ninety five percent of my elective coronary artery bypass patients go home by day five post op and many of these patients elect to go home on the evening of day four.  My re-admissions rates are some of the lowest on the country.

I have always welcomed feedback from my patients and strive every day to improve my service.  I collect patient satisfaction scores on a five point Lickert scale in many domains.  I only report the 5/5 satisfaction scores to represent the proportion of patients who have been delighted by my service – 96.36% of new patients feel that I treats them with dignity and respect, 90.91% feel he listens listen to their concerns and 92.73% feel he explains everything they want to know.   In the words of a patient;

I had an excellent clinic with Mr O’Regan who asked all the relevant questions regarding my condition and general health. He also gave me a very thorough examination. Mr O’Regan then proceeded to explain my condition in detail and how he intended to rectify the condition under surgery. All this was explained in a professional and relaxed way and in easy to understand language, which left my wife and I confident that I was being treated by a very professional surgeon in a very professional surgical team.

On discharge, 91.92% feel I was helpful and approachable and 95.88% would recommend me to others

Extremely capable, understandable and he put me at ease.
Extremely fantastic and supportive to family, kept family informed of what had happened.
